TestDaF

A standardised test of German language proficiency: Test of German as a second language

Short for: "Test für Deutsch als Fremdsprache" (Test of German as a second language)

A standardised test of German language proficiency accepted by all German universities as proof of language proficiency.

The test takes place at licensed testing centres worldwide. The test is made up of four sections:

  • "Leseverstehen" (Reading Comprehension)
  • "Hörverstehen" (Listening Comprehension)
  • "Schriftlicher Ausdruck" (Written Production)
  • "Mündlicher Ausdruck" (Oral Production)

These subsections may be passed at different proficiency levels. Which of these proficiency levels are necessary for admission is determined by the universities. Depending on the course of study, universities may require different levels of proficiency.
